NATO in 2018: Limits and Opportunities in Responding to Existing and Emerging Challenges

What is the future of NATO and security cooperation in Europe?

The global security policy landscape is facing great challenges, some expect almost tectonic shifts. Shortly before the NATO Summit on 11 and 12 July 2018, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung invited international experts to Riga to explore the limits and possibilities of NATO to respond to existing and emerging challenges against the background of current developments.

The conference was opened by the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, with a keynote speech on foreign and security policy.

In two panels of the discussion, policy makers and experts from Canada, Poland, Russia and the Baltic states reflected on the relations between NATO and Russia in the context of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence, as well as the emerging challenges in the Baltics and NATO’s role in responding to them.

The discussion was organized by the FES Riga in a close cooperation with the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, NATO Public Diplomacy Division, Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Riga and the Embassy of Canada to Latvia.
