Series of studies on three Baltic dreams

On 20 June 2024, a presentation on the study "The Latvian Dream. The seeds of freedom in a divided society" took place at Hotel Bergs in Riga, Latvia. The study focused on the following questions: Do the people of Latvia have a dream? Are they in a position to realize this dream? Is it the state that fulfils citizens' dreams or are the citizens themselves responsible for making their dreams come true? And do older and young people have different dreams? Is there a common Latvian dream?

The study sheds light on the vision and national character of the Latvian people, making a significant contribution to future understanding. It establishes that democracy and values are important values in Latvian society, with the younger generation in particular striving for these values. However, the results are not entirely homogeneous across the country.

The study was also conducted in Lithuania and Estonia with the respective titles "The Lithuanian Dream. Bread is enough, we want games" and "The Estonian Dream. The next 5000 years". The studies looked at the same questions, but came to different conclusions. Presentations were also held on these studies, giving participants the opportunity to discuss the results.

To find answers, the FES worked together with the Estonian polling institute Turu/Uuringute, the Latvian polling Institute SKDS and the Lithuanian polling institute Baltijos Tyrimai. Over three workshops and with the support of focus groups it was possible to draft a common questionnaire for the three Baltic states, consolidating the core questions and adding specific questions for each country.
