Presentation of the "Jewish Rēzekne" publication
Divided into two parts, it tells the history of Latvia’s largest Jewish community in Rēzekne until 1941. As part of the occupation of Latvia by the German army in 1941 and the takeover of power by the Nazis, most of the Jewish population fell victim to the German extermination programme, with Latvia’s once multi-faceted Jewish culture being largely lost.
The task of the publication is to work through the history of the Jewish community in Rēzekne and to document the reconstruction of the "Green Synagogue" there, assessing its symbolic significance in the life of Jews in this town and in Latvia.
The publication is the result of two years of research, with an architect and a designer accompanying the restoration process of the synagogue. At the same time, the publication includes contributions about the historical place of Jewish history in Latvia that were made as part of a previous specialist conference under the same title in the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
