Presentation on “Latvian Foreign and Security Policy Yearbook 2018”

Latvia's annual foreign and security policy yearbook was launched on January 23rd by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics.

The 250-page tome contains a selection of essays by experts and academics identifying the main items on the Latvian foreign policy agenda with EU matters, Russia and developing trade links with the Far East to the fore.

The Latvian Foreign and Security Policy Yearbook 2018 aims to contribute to the understanding of Latvia’s foreign and security policy decisions and considerations in 2017, as well as assess the opportunities and concerns that await Latvia in 2018. During the past year Latvia saw considerable improvements in its security situation, while simultaneously met with new international and regional challenges. 2018 promises to be a similarly dynamic year full of opportunities and tests. Latvia will have to make brave and strong choices in its foreign and security policy.

The project is supported by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Saeima and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.

The volume was presented on a public event where Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and Andris Spruds, director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs (LIIA), and Ojars Eriks Kalnins, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament, gave an overview of the main trends in foreign and security policy for 2018. These main trends were also discussed with representatives from science, civic society and media. In a round table discussion therefore joined Lolita Cigane, Chairperson of the European Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament, Ojars Skudra, associate Professor at the University of Latvia, Andis Kudors, director at the Centre for East European Policy Studies and Imants Frederiks Ozols, head of the “Pasaules panorama” program from LTV news service.
